HPDHS Course: Increasing the Mental Health Competence of DHs

December 13 @ 7:30 pm

Presented by Taryn Tang and Purple Yip.

Course Description:
The impact of a client’s mental health status is rarely considered in oral health care. However, mental health can play a significant role in oral health. Dental Hygienists typically spend the most time with clients and are in an ideal position to not only gauge the overall well-being of clients but also to provide empathetic oral health care. In this presentation we will discuss:

1.The major mental health and substance abuse diagnoses and their relationship to oral health.
2. How mental health problems can manifest during a dental appointment.
3. How to build practical skills to provide effective oral health care to clients with mental health challenges.
